If an oil filter is leaking it's likely because the seal that seals the oil filter to the engine is dried out.

Or it could be that the oil filter was not tightened enough or the oil filter was over tightened when installing it.

Also when installing an oil filter you should take some fresh oil with your finger or a towel and wipe the rubber oil seal on the oil filter with some oil.

This helps lubricate the oil filter seal and makes the seal on the oil filter seal properly.

I learned this before when I just put the oil filter on my first truck as a teenager and it started leaking.

My dad asked me if I had put some oil on the rubber seal and I failed to do so.

So I had to remove the oil filter, put some oil on it and then it resealed.

However if you have an older oil filter that needs replaced then remove the old oil filter, add a new one and put some oil on the seal before installing it.

Never put any silicone or other sealer on the oil filter seal as it can make it leak more.
