When an electric stove heating element is overheating it is because of too much electricity going through to the heating element.

The switch which is known as the infinite switch on the stove can malfunction and cause the electric stove element to overheat.

The infinite switch is the switch that is behind the control panel that has a knob on it to turn the heat up and down which allows the heating element to get the needed voltage for the setting.

When that switch malfunctions it increases the electricity to the heating element and causes the heating element to overheat.

You can usually replace the switch pretty easily and cheap if you do it yourself.

Just make sure to unplug the electric stove as it has 240 volts going to it which can kill you quickly.

The parts for most electric stoves can be bought online pretty cheap and there's videos online as well to show you how to replace the switch and other parts of the stove.
