Yes mood stabilizers do help people with anxiety and Bipolar disorders.

When a person has anxiety and or a Bipolar Disorder the doctor will usually first prescribe some mood stabilizers which are usually pretty effective at treating the anxiety and Bipolar Disorders.

After a person is taking mood stabilizers for awhile which helps stabilize the persons mood then the doctor may prescribe other medications such as antidepressants.

If you take antidepressants before taking mood stabilizers then your anxiety or bipolar disorder symptoms may actually worsen instead of getting better.

So you usually take the mood stabilizers first and then once your mood improves and your anxiety improves then your doctor will prescribe other medications for your anxiety.

The mood stabilizers can take a week or so to work fully but if you don't see improvements in your anxiety or Bipolar Disorder within a month of taking the mood stabilizers you should tell your doctor.
