The oldest road is the Post Track road which is a prehistoric causeway in the valley of the River Brue in the Somerset Levels, England and it is one of the oldest known constructed trackways and dates from around 3838 BCE.

The oldest paved road is a road that was constructed in Egypt some time between 2600 and 2200 BC.

First dirt roads were more common for cars when they first came about but then later on we got paved roads.

Around 1950's the highways were built so that we could get from one state to another state with ease.

Before cars many people traveled across land on horses and horse and buggies.

Sometimes Oxen would also pull wagons that hauled people and things they needed.

Years ago it could take months to cross into a state that now takes one day to complete the trip in cars.

The world's first recorded long-distance road trip by automobile took place in Germany in August 1888 when Bertha Benz, the wife of Karl Benz, the inventor of the first patented motor car (the Benz Patent-Motorwagen), travelled from Mannheim to Pforzheim (a distance of 106 km (66 mi)) in the third experimental Benz.
