Vaseline does work great as a substitute for dielectric grease.

Although dielectric grease is best used on the electrical connections as it does not degrade rubber and the connections and also dielectric grease is not as combustible as Vaseline.

But if all you have is Vaseline to use in place of Dielectric Grease it's fine to use Vaseline which Petroleum Jelly in place of dielectric grease.

I've used Vaseline before on trailer wire connections, tail light bulb connections and other bulb connections as well as any other electric connection on my vehicle.

I've also used Vaseline on top of my car battery terminal connections to help prevent corrosion and it works great.

If you do get corrosion on your battery terminals or other electrical connections you can get rid of the corrosion by using some baking soda and warm water mixed together.
