A safe temperature to keep your house in the winter months is 55 F minimum when you're away from the house.

If you let your house get colder than 55 F in the winter time you risk the water pipes freezing and bursting causing major repair bills for the plumbing as well as a huge water bill for the water leak and the cost of repairs caused by the flooding of the broken water pipes that floods your house.

Most if not all home furnace thermostats do not go lower than 55 F so as long as you keep the thermostat set to at least that temperature then you should have no problems with frozen pipes.

When I'm gone I have my programmable thermostat set to 55 and then I have it set to bring the temperature of the house to at least 70 F by the time I get home.

I cannot stand being in a house in winter that the temperature is set lower than 70 F.

My mom keeps her house at 60 F in the winter which is too chilly for me.

At night I turn the thermostat down to 60 F because I'm under blankets and am warm enough but during the day I have to have the temperature to at least 70 F.
