If your brakes are grinding it's a sign of brake pad failure and the brakes should be inspected.
Brakes grinding on a car or any other vehicle is not a good thing at all.
The brake pads have friction material on the brake pads which when they make contact with your brake rotor help to stop the car.
When the friction material on the brake pads wear down to metal then the brake pads cannot stop the vehicle as easy and the metal of the brake pads will make contact with the rotors and cause a grinding noise when you step on the brakes.
Only drive the vehicle to a brake shop or replace the brakes yourself before you drive too far because the longer you drive with grinding brakes the more damage will be done to the brake rotors and you'll need to replace the brake rotors as well.
If the brake rotors are warped, thin or are cracked then they will need replaced.
