A newborn baby should have at least 6 wet diapers per day if they are healthy and hydrated properly.

A newborns wet diaper should be fully soaked when changed although some parents change the newborns diaper before it gets soaked.

Unless the newborn is crying or feels uncomfortable the diaper only needs to be changed when the diaper becomes soaked and full.

Waiting until the diaper is full and swollen up fully is a good way to tell if your newborn is hydrated enough.

If your newborn has at least 6 soaking wet diapers per 24 hour period the newborn is okay and healthy.

If the newborn baby has fewer than 6 soaking wet diapers in 24 hours then they may be dehydrated and you should take the newborn to the doctor.

Some newborns go through 10 to 13 diapers per day which is also very normal but any less than 6 diapers and certainly less than 3 or 2 diapers per day is not good.

As your baby gets older they will wet less and will go through less diapers per day.

At 1 year old they may only go through 4 to 5 diapers per day and at 2 years old and 3 years old they may only go through 2 to 3 diapers per day.
