Plastic water pipes are prone to bursting when they freeze up. Especially the PVC water pipes.

Always insulate your water pipes to help prevent freezing and bursting.

Another thing you should do to prevent burst water pipes is leave the faucets dripping using a slow stream. Moving water can freeze but it has a less likely chance of freezing when the water is moving instead of standing still in the water pipe.
