Some dogs do protect their owners and families but some may only try and some dogs may do nothing to protect or try to protect their owners or family.

I've heard of dogs that seemed protective when someone such as a stranger came around and the dog would bark and bark and growl at the person.

But when it came time for real protection such as somebody breaking into the house the dog would bark but then get scared and run off.

Also if someone has a gun and breaks into your house the dog really cannot do much as if someone has a gun and breaks into your house the dog could and will likely just be shot and killed.

Then the dog would not be able to bite the person or injure them or keep them away.

So while a dog can sometimes scare people off or attack someone that may be breaking into your home without a gun the dog cannot protect you from someone who has a gun.

I've heard of burglars shooting the dog in the backyard or shooting the dog in the house when the dog came up to them.
