Ducks do fly at night especially when the ducks are migrating to another place.
However I've also seen ducks fly early in the morning and even just during the day.
When ducks are flying during the day or early morning they may just be flying around from one place to another and not migrating long distances.
But when ducks fly at night they are most commonly migrating to another town or state.
Canadian geese are also a bird that fly's at night when migrating.
Some male ducks will kill their babies and some male ducks will kill other ducks babies.
It's not known as to why the male duck wants to kill it's babies or other duck babies but it does happen.
Some female ducks have also killed their own babies and other baby ducks.
When a duck follows you the duck could just like you and want to be near you.
Or the duck following you may be following you and hoping that you will feed the duck some food or they just are trusting you and want to be near you for protection.
We have ducks at a public park here that are fed by the park visitors and the ducks really trust people and will get close to them and follow them around.
I love going to the park and seeing the ducks.
Yes male ducks do sometimes kill ducklings and especially if the ducklings are strange ducklings that are not their own.
Most times it's strange ducklings that come near them that they kill but some male ducks will kill their own ducklings.
Some ducks do mate for life while other ducks may not mate for life.

Female ducks can lay eggs without needing a male duck.
All birds including female ducks can lay eggs without mating with a male duck but the eggs that the female duck lay without mating are not fertile eggs.
That means that the those non fertile eggs that the female duck lays without the male will not hatch into baby ducks.
If you want to make baby ducks then you need a male duck to mate with the female duck so that the duck can lay fertile eggs that will hatch into baby ducks.
You don't have to have a male duck though to simply have the female duck lay eggs.
You will still get duck eggs that you can eat without needing a male duck for the female duck to mate.
Just like the eggs you buy in a store are not fertile eggs so those eggs that you buy as chicken eggs in the store will never hatch into baby chickens.
Because the chicken eggs that are bought in stores are laid by chickens who have not mated with a male chicken.
