Plastic motor oil containers can be thrown in your regular garbage can or garbage bag as long as the motor oil container is empty and has no oil in it.
If you have used oil in motor oil containers then you can drop them off at your local landfill if they have the option of dropping off hazardous waste.
Oreilly Auto and some auto repair shops may also take used motor oil to recycle or even use in a motor oil shop heater.
As long as the motor oil container has no oil in it then you can just dispose of the used motor oil containers into your regular garbage can.
As of now used motor oil containers cannot be recycled but maybe someday they can be.
