Go to home depot or lowes or any other hardware store where you get your water heater heating elements and they should sell a socket that's made to remove water heater elements.
You put the socket on the water heater element nut and then put a wrench on the water heater element socket and it should come out then.
You won't be able to get the water heater heating element out without this special socket. They don't cost much either.
