When you see butterflies flying in groups the groups of butterflies are called kaleidoscope.

However although most commonly called kaleidoscope the group of butterflies are also sometimes called and known as a swarm of butterflies.

Either name of a swarm of butterflies or kaleidoscope of butterflies is the correct way to refer to them.

I just call a group of butterflies a swarm of butterflies because it's easier to say the word swarm and remember the word swarm than it is to say the word kaleidoscope or remember the word kaleidoscope.

So you can call the group of butterflies either a swarm of butterflies or a kaleidoscope of butterflies and either of them will be correct.

Because they are a swarm of butterflies when they are flying in a group.
