When a water pump goes out the water pump will usually make sounds such as a squeaking, ticking or grinding noise.

The noise may get worse as you accelerate the engine if the bearings are going out in the water pump.

When the water pump does eventually fail it can seize up and break your belt which can leave you stranded and not only will your belt possibly break your engine will also overheat when it cannot get the coolant going through the engine.

You can use a screwdriver or a piece of pipe and use it as a listening tool to listen to the water pump and see if the water pump is going out.

If the water pump is going out you need to get it replaced or replace it soon because it's gonna overheat your engine and leave you stranded.
