Whether renters insurance is mandatory depends on your landlord. Some landlords will stipulate in the lease that you must have renters insurance after you move in and if you don't have renters insurance then your lease could be terminated.
But others don't care whether you carry renters insurance or not. But having renters insurance is something I wouldn't go without.
