A man or other human can indeed outrun a wolf if the human is in good shape and can run fast enough.
If you have a wolf trying to attack you and it runs after you then you can start running if you have no other choice.
However as long as you do not get too close to the wolf then they will likely not even try to chase you as long as the wolf does not see you as a threat.
The best thing to do is not get to close to a wolf and if you do see a wolf just back away slowly and leave and the wolf will usually not bother you.
Back in June 2004 someone did outrun a wolf which was a pretty amazing thing and it saved his life.
If you do see a wolf make sure to stand tall and make yourself look larger and then while remaining eye contact with the wolf back away slowly.
If you have pepper spray on you then you could try pepper spraying the wolf if it tries to attack you but only do that as a last resort.
Or if you have a gun with you and the wolf tries to attack you then shooting the wolf will be the best option before it gets too close to attack you.
