The recommended miles before an oil change is or at least was 3,000 miles.

Now most car manufacturers say you can get by changing your engine oil every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

At 10,000 miles that is once per year and most cars today have an oil change light that lets you know when you need to change the engine oil.

When your oil change light comes on be sure to change the engine oil so you don't damage your engine.

On my older truck I change the engine oil every 3,000 miles or at least every year regardless of miles to protect the engine.

On my newer car I change the engine oil every 10,000 miles or sooner if I don't get to 10,000 miles.

My car is what I usually drive to work so it usually gets 10,000 miles and sometimes as much as 12,000 miles on it within a year.

Also check your oil at least once per week or when you're getting gasoline to make sure your engine oil level is at the correct level.

That's a good way to catch any potential oil loss due to leaks or burning of the engine oil.

It's better to know you have oil than it is to start and drive your vehicle and be low on engine oil.
