Most children can understand consequences of their actions as early as age 3.

The 3 year may not be able to fully understand the consequences of their actions but they can and should be able to understand some.

They usually know that what they did was bad when you put them in time out and punish them for what they did.

But it can take until the child is at least 5 or 6 years old before the child can fully understand right from wrong and understand the consequences fully.

When a child is 3 and acting up and needs punished you can give them time out and even spank them when needed.

I'm a firm believer in spanking when it's needed because sometimes talking to them and time outs may not be enough.

I've spanked my kids when they were 3 and continued to do so until they reached 13 years old and they still love me and my one child who is 18 years old actually thanked me for spanking him and keeping him in line.

I was also spanked as a child and I turned out okay.
