Yes babies are smarter than most people think and they can easily sense when something is wrong or when their mother is sad.

Infants and babies are very sensitive to emotion and are able to sense when you're upset, sad, happy etc.

When the baby reaches a few months old they can sense and tell the difference between a sad and happy face on you.

It's okay to show sadness around babies as they learn from you and babies get sad as well just like adults do.

There's no need to hide being sad around the baby and the baby could also make you happy when you're sad.

When a baby reaches 1 year old they can sense when other people are sad or happy as well.
