The length of time that points will affect your auto insurance rates depends on how serious the offense is and how many points you have on your driving record.
Some points may only affect your auto insurance rates for a period of 1 to 2 years while some other points may affect your auto insurance rates for as long as 10 years.
If you do get points on your license due to speeding or other driving offenses and moving violations the points can cause your auto insurance rates to stay high for as long as 10 years.
After 10 years though the points should no longer affect your auto insurance rates and as long as you keep a good driving record and don't get anymore points on your drivers license or driving record then your auto insurance rates should decrease.
Even a seat belt violation could raise your insurance rates but usually the auto insurance is not affected until a year later when the auto insurance companies check your driving record again.
