The reason that it has been said to under inflate your vehicles tires in winter is to gain traction on snow and ice.

But actually when you under inflate your tires it does not really gain anymore traction for snow or ice and actually can cause your tires to wear out faster.

The under inflated tires also increase your fuel consumption because your engine and transmission have to work harder against the added resistance of the under inflated tires.

If you want better traction in winter you need to have some snow chains or studded tires or tires made for driving on ice and snow.

But you should always keep your tires inflated to the proper pressures to help keep control of your vehicle as well as keep your fuel mileage where it should be.

The cold air can also deflate tires so make sure to keep them inflated and check the tires every few days to ensure they have the proper recommended tire pressures.
