When a torque converter goes bad you'll notice some symptoms such as chattering noises, high stall speeds, hard shifting, shuddering, transmission slipping, transmission overheating, dirty transmission fluid and other strange noises.

If the torque converter fails completely then the vehicle may not move at all.

Torque converters rarely fail as long as you keep the transmission filled with transmission fluid and as long as the transmission has no leaks then the transmission fluid should not be lost.

You should also change the transmission fluid and transmission filter every 30,000 to 50,000 miles so that the torque converter and transmission last a long time.

Just like the oil in your engine needs changed as well as your oil filter you need to change the transmission fluid and transmission filter every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

Failure to do so can cause your transmission to wear out faster and then leave you stranded and cost you the cost of a transmission replacement or rebuild.

I have automatic transmissions with the same torque converter going on 500,000 miles in vehicles and they have always been maintained.
