Wood burning stoves are great heat sources and if you can get free firewood you can save lots of money on heating bills.
But the firewood does require work to cut, split and stack it and carry it into the house and then you have to deal with lighting the fire and reloading the stove.
I can go to my job and make more money than I would save by working on the wood pile to burn wood.
I might save $10.00 per day burning wood because my natural gas bill usually costs me $300.00 per month which equals out to $10.00 per day.
But if I stay home and work to get firewood ready then I don't make my regular salary of $120.00 per day at my job.
So although I saved $10.00 per day burning wood I lost out on making the $110.00 so in reality I lost $110.00 by not going to that job and instead getting wood ready.
So if you can make more money working on a job then you should do that instead of working with a wood pile.
Wood stoves do require work and they create dust in the house from the ashes when you clean them out.
I do burn some wood for emergencies or just when I want a nice fire to look at on a weekend or when I'm home but I don't burn wood all the time.
You also have to have space to store the wood so that the firewood doesn't get wet either.
