A load can legally overhang a trailer at the rear by 4 feet as long as you have a red flag tied to the overhanging load.

I have overhung a load of steel before by 6 feet which was not the best thing to do and could have gotten me a ticket but I was taking back dirt roads mainly so it wasn't much of a problem as it would have been if I were going down the highway.

It was some steel from an old farm that I was hauling to the scrap yard at the time and I didn't have a long enough trailer to prevent it from overhanging.

But if you're going down the highway or on other public roads you should not overhang the load on the trailer by more than 4 feet.

Make sure you always tie a red flag to the overhang loads on the trailer.

The law basically says that you can overhang oversized loads by 3 feet to the front, 4 inches to the side and 4 feet to the rear.
