A coat can help keep a dog warmer in the winter when they are outside but a dog doesn't require a coat as long as you bring the dog back inside the house during the winter to stay warm.

I've never put coats on any of my dogs and none of my dogs would wear an additional coat besides their own natural fur coat.

If you want to put a dog coat on your dog to keep them warmer when outside you can do so if they want to allow it but if they don't want to wear the dog coat then you shouldn't force them.

The dog will be just fine without wearing any coats because they have the protective fur that naturally keeps the dog warm.

Humans don't have that natural fur to keep them warm but dogs do.

So humans require coats to stay warm but dogs and cats do not require coats.
