Yes it is possible to overcharge a car battery with a battery charger.

If you leave the battery charger on the car battery too long then the battery will start to boil over the acid which actually kill the battery.

If you leave the battery charger on the battery for 10 to 14 hours it should do no harm if the battery is really low but if you leave the battery charger on the battery longer than 10 to 14 hours then the battery can get too hot and go bad.

I once left a battery on the charger overnight and into the next night and had just remembered it.

By then the battery had been on the charger for around 20 hours which was way too long.

After I got to the battery and unplugged the charger the battery was boiling over acid and was hot and the battery was no longer good.

A car battery should be fully charged within 5 to 8 hours which is long enough to charge the battery.
