Some babies with microcephaly survive and live a long life without any other issues.
But the microcephaly can ranger from less severe to more severe and the more sever the microcephaly the baby is born with the less chance they have of surviving.
Some babies will continue to live until around 12 years to 18 years with microcephaly and others may live a normal lifespan.
There's no treatment or cure for the microcephaly so it's considered to be a lifelong condition but usually having microcephaly shortens the babies lifespan by quite a bit and it makes it hard for them to do normal tasks that other children and babies normally would do in most cases.
The good news is that the birth defect microcephaly is a rare condition so it's not something that happens to most babies.
And some babies who still have the birth defect of microcephaly can sometimes still meet the milestones like speaking, sitting and walking like babies without the condition do and some just experience the smaller head size with no other issues.
