Rats hate the smell of ammonia so you can soak some rags in some ammonia and place the ammonia soaked rags in places where rats are hanging out or coming into your house at.

The rats will smell the ammonia and avoid those areas because the smell of ammonia is terrible to rats.

Some other smells other than ammonia that will keep rats away are Peppermint oil, castor oil and citronella oil which all emit smells that rats hate.

You can soak some cotton balls in some of those oils and place them near areas where you see the rats hanging out and they will avoid the area.

You can also spray some peppermint oil around the areas where mice or rats are hanging out and they will stay away.

You should also use some rat poison to actually kill the rats because they do cause disease and if they bite you then you can become sick.

You might also want to set out a live trap and then bait the rat with some food and then kill the rat inside the live trap before releasing it.
