Hiking both upwards and downwards will tone your body.
But when you hike back down a hill your body will tone up much more due to the force of gravity against your body as you hike downwards.
Hiking is also a very good exercise to improve your health and improve your heart health as well and the hiking gets your heart pumping and your blood flowing.

I try to hike as often as possible and being outdoors is also wonderful and helps relieve stress as well as lowering blood pressure.
I would rather go hike in nature than run on a treadmill for exercise and I even hike in the Fall and winter as well as long as the weather is not too bad.
