Torque converters rarely go bad but they can go bad and need replaced.

If you constantly run the transmission low on transmission fluid then the torque converter won't get enough lubrication to keep it working properly.

Then the torque converter could fail and your transmission will fail as well.

If you're replacing the transmission with another one you should go ahead and replace the torque converter as well and the flywheel should be replaced at that same time as well.

But other than that torque converters usually last the life of the car and will usually outlast the transmission itself.

But I would always just install a new torque converter if I were installing another transmission because you have to remove the torque converter anyway to replace the transmission.

Torque converters should last well over 200,000 to 300,000 miles.

I have a truck that has 500,000 miles on it with original engine, original transmission and original torque converter and I've always change the transmission filter, transmission fluid every 30,000 miles.
