If you've run out of dishwasher detergent and need to wash the dishes then you could use laundry detergent in the dishwasher.
Although it may take a few rinse cycles to get all the soap off the dishes but the laundry detergent will work just fine for cleaning dishes in a dishwasher.
I've used the powdered laundry detergent before as well as the liquid laundry detergent in the dishwasher and it cleaned the dishes okay but I had to run the dishwasher through a second rinse cycle to remove all the soap residue from the dishes.
You could also use some dish soap that you use in the sink as it will work just as good as the dishwasher detergent.
The dishwasher detergent is designed to create less suds so that it won't create so much soap residue and will rinse off the dishes much better.
