When a car is making a whining sound when you accelerate the whining noise can come from two different places and those places are the transmission or power steering pump.

Your power steering pump may either be going out or the power steering fluid is low and needs refilled.

If it's your transmission your transmissions gears could be worn out or you could have low transmission fluid so check the transmission fluid and make sure it's at the proper level.

If it's not then add some more transmission fluid until it's full but just don't overfill the transmission fluid and make sure you use the proper amount of transmission fluid.

Another cause is the alternator bearings going out which can get worse when you accelerate as the bearings in the alternator are spinning faster and faster.

You can start the car and rev the engine up and use a screwdriver to listen to where the noise is coming from and just place the end of the screwdriver on the alternator and put your ear on the screwdriver handle and you can see if the alternator is making the sound.

You can also buy a mechanics stethoscope as well and do the same thing.
