Yes drinking water can cause Legionnaires disease.

But to get the Legionnaires disease from the water the water must be infected with the bacteria that causes Legionnaires disease.

If the water is clean and doesn't contain the bacteria to cause the Legionnaires disease then you won't get it from drinking the water.

Most people who do get Legionnaires disease get the disease from inhaling the microscopic water droplets that contain the Legionnaires disease bacteria.

If you're worried that the water you're drinking may contain the Legionnaires disease bacteria then you can boil the water to kill off the bacteria that causes Legionnaires disease.

The chlorine used in most city water treatment plants helps to kill off bacteria including the Legionnaires disease bacteria.

So your risk of getting the disease from city tap water is very low but if you want to be safe you can boil the water to kill the bacteria.
