Yes you should take antibiotics after a tooth extraction to prevent the risk of infection.

After I had a tooth extraction my dentist prescribed me some antibiotics to take while the tooth extraction healed up.

Your dentist should prescribe you some antibiotics to prevent complications due to infection and if the dentist doesn't prescribe the antibiotics then you should ask the dentist to see if they will prescribe you some antibiotics to treat the tooth extraction and prevent the infection.
