When you have a portable basketball hoop with the base you can put either sand or dirt into the base of the basketball hoop.
On our basketball hoop we bought some play sand and put the play sand into the base of the basketball hoop which kept it sturdy enough to prevent it from falling over.
When you fill the base of the basketball hoop with sand or dirt it will become heavy and you won't be able to easily move it around.
But you need something such as the sand or dirt to hold the base of the basketball hoop up properly so that it won't tip over.
If you want to just use some dirt from your yard that will work as well.
Our portable basketball hoop is now buried though in the ground so I didn't have to worry about the kids getting hurt in the street from running out for a basketball.
I moved the basketball hoop into the backyard and had it buried and then poured a concrete pad for the basketball hoop.
The kids are much safer in the backyard away from the street.
