If your engine oil light comes on it can either mean you have a low oil level or have dirty oil that needs changed.
If your engine oil light does come on you should check the engine oil as soon as possible such as getting home and then letting the engine sit for awhile and then check the engine oil.
If it's low on engine oil then you need to add some oil to prevent damage to the engine so don't drive too far with an engine oil oil light on.
The engine oil light is alerting you to tell you something is going wrong so you should always check the engine oil.
I check my engine oil level after every 2 days just to make sure I have oil in the engine and enough oil because it's better to know that it's got a good enough engine oil level.
