Can overfilling engine oil cause engine to smoke?

Yes overfilling the engine with too much oil could cause the engine to smoke if the overfilled oil is overflowing and churning into foam, it may start to burn in the engine and cause the engine to smoke out the exhaust.

If your car is smoking blue smoke out the exhaust then it's an indication of oil burning in the engine but if it's another color such as white smoke then the cause is not the burning oil.

However if you did overfill your engine with too much oil you need to drain the excess oil out because it can cause severe engine damage.

Your engine could eventually lock up and need rebuilt.

The white smoke coming out an engine exhaust is coolant burning which can be caused by coolant loss due to a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure.
