Yes direct burial wire can be placed in conduit if you want to do so.

Direct burial wire is made to be direct buried in the soil without needing conduit and the insulation is designed to hold up to the soil and protect the direct burial wire from moisture and water getting into contact with the wire.

So you can place direct burial wire directly into the ground without the need of conduit but I've always just placed the direct burial wire inside conduit to add an additional layer of protection.

That additional layer of protection protects the wire should someone decide to dig in the area where the electric wire is buried.

So for the bit extra money it's worth it to just bury the direct burial wire in some conduit to make the wire more safe and longer lasting.
