A bad distributor cap that is corroding inside or losing contact can cause engine stalling as well as engine misfires, hard starting and even no starting.

I would also check the ignition control module on the vehicle to make sure it's good and replace it if in doubt as the ignition control module works with the distributor as well as the ignition coil to produce spark.

The bad ignition control module can cause engine stalling.

Other things that could cause engine stalling are low fuel pressure, bad ignition control module, bad ignition coil as well as bad spark plugs, bad spark plug wires etc.

A bad fuel pump or bad fuel pump relay can also cause an engine to stall or a bad coolant temperature sensor.

But yes if the distributor cap is bad or the distributor rotor is bad then it can't create the proper spark to send to the spark plugs to fire the cylinders.

A distributor cap and rotor should be replaced after 50,000 to 100,000 miles along with your spark plug wires, ignition coils, ignition control module etc.

That would be good as a regular tuneup.
