Yes in order to return something to Home Depot that you purchased from Home Depot you'll need a receipt for proof of purchase.

Without the receipt Home Depot will not be able to take the item or items back because they can't prove you bought the item.

If you have purchased the item with a credit or debit card then sometimes Home Depot will be able to look up your receipt and see when you purchased the item or items and in that case you can sometimes return what you purchased from Home Depot to Home Depot.

I have used my credit card number to return some things to Home Depot without the receipt because Home Depot was able to look up my receipt and even print me a new receipt of my old receipt that I lost.
