The landlord will be the one who will or should have insurance on the building to cover damage to the entire building in the event of a fire or other natural disaster.

When you're renting an apartment or renting a house the landlord will likely have homeowners insurance on the building or home you're renting.

The homeowners insurance that the landlord should have will cover the exterior of the building or home and cover the cost of replacing the building should it be completely destroyed in a fire or other natural disaster.

But when you're renting an apartment or home you should purchase renters insurance to cover your belongings in case of the items being stolen or damaged in a fire or other natural disaster.

Not all landlords will require you to have renters insurance however some may require renters insurance and it's still a good idea to have renters insurance in the event something happens to your belongings.

You can sometimes get renters insurance for as much as $10.00 per month especially if you bundle it in with other insurance such as auto insurance.
