Many things can cause the check engine light to come on such as a loose or bad gas cap, bad spark plugs, bad ignition coils, low transmission fluid, low engine oil and much more.

But if everything else checks out and is good on the vehicle then yes the catalytic converter can be a culprit when it comes to a check engine light coming on.

So it's possible that the catalytic converter is failing, has failed or maybe the catalytic converter has become plugged up.

I would have a mechanic check the vehicle out and maybe have them plug a diagnostic tester into the vehicle to see what is causing the check engine light to come on.

Autozone and some other auto parts stores can also do a simple check engine light test and see what's causing the check engine light to come on.
