As long as you're not burning any pine in your open fireplace then any other firewood is a good wood to burn in the fireplace.
I preferred to burn oak firewood in my fireplace when I had an open fireplace in my other house.
The fireplace put out a little heat but not really much even with the oak.
Now I burn wood in a wood burning stove and still use the majority of oak in my wood stove which does a good heating output.
Maple, Spruce and Birch are some other good firewood species for both fireplaces and wood burning stoves but Oak does a very good job at putting out a lot of heat although oak takes awhile longer to cure and season.
