Solar Panels can provide you with a good amount of electricity but to power an entire house you need a big and more expensive solar panel system to completely do away with your electric bill and electric company.
Also in some counties and municipalities you still need to be hooked up to the electrical service through the electric company by law otherwise they can say your house is not habitable.
So check with your local laws and regulations because you could get fined if you disconnect from the electric utility and use solar panels as your sole electricity source.
It you're in a rural area or way out in the woods then you could get by with just solar panels and not need to be hooked up to the main electricity through the electric company.
Still it's nice to have the power coming in from the electric utility to power most of the house.
