Starting out succulents in regular potting soil is okay however once the succulents begin growing you should use more than just regular potting soil to allow them to grow properly.

A good soil mix for growing succulents is 2 parts by volume of a potting soil, 1 part perlite, and 1 part small size gravel, e.g., pumice, turface, or crushed granite.

When you mix those together you'll create a good growing soil for the succulents to thrive properly once they get growing.

The potting soil works best when the succulents are small because the succulents require more water when they're small and first growing and then you can move the succulents to the other soil mixture once they get bigger and don't require as much water.
