The bell of the stethoscope is used for hearing low frequency sounds such as rumbles and gallops in the body.

And the diaphragm of the stethoscope is used for hearing higher frequency sounds such as the heartbeat etc.

The bell part of the stethoscope is the top of the stethoscope while the diaphragm part of the stethoscope is the bottom part.
