Sleep wedges were once advertised as making a safer way for babies 6 months and under to sleep so that they stay in one position during the night and don't turn over and suffocate and are supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS.
But research has actually shown that the sleep wedge may actually be more harmful than helpful to a sleeping baby 6 months and under.
The soft material of the sleep wedge or sleep position product can actually cause suffocation in the baby.
To keep a baby from developing SIDS or suffocating never place any soft objects in the crib, bassinet or playpen while they're sleeping.
Always place the baby on a firm surface and place the baby on it's back for sleeping until they're at least 1 year of age.
When the baby is able to roll back over unassisted then it's safe for the baby to sleep on their sides but until then the baby should always be placed on their backs to sleep.
