Yes you need to fast for 16 total hours when intermittent fasting for it to be effective and for you to have a healthy metabolism.

You fast for 16 hours and only eat within an 8 hour window.

Intermittent fasting also has many other health benefits including better brain function, lower blood sugar levels, and lower inflammation which is all backed up by research.
