You can use any type of backpack or luggage including a backpacking backpack as carry on luggage as long as it meets the size requirements.

Most airlines allow bags up to 45 linear inches (length + width + depth) or 22" long, 14" wide, and 9" deep so as long as the backpacking backpack fits in those size requirements then you can use it as carry on luggage and if not you need to put it in with your other luggage.
